Finding Your Main Water Shut-Off in a Richmond Hill House

GTA Plumber Match · Updated October 2026

In a plumbing emergency, the first thing a plumber asks is: did you shut the water off? Plenty of people don't know where the valve is. Find yours today. It takes five minutes.

In finished basements the main shut-off is often behind a small panel under the stairs.

Where to look

In most Richmond Hill detached homes, including Bayview Hill, Jefferson, Westbrook and Oak Ridges, the water line enters through the front basement wall into the mechanical room, near the water meter. The main valve is right next to the meter. In finished basements, it can be behind a removable panel or inside a storage closet under the stairs.

Townhomes along Yonge and near Hillcrest Mall usually have the valve in the utility or laundry room.

Two kinds of valve

  • Lever (ball valve): turn a quarter turn so the handle crosses the pipe.
  • Round wheel (gate valve): turn clockwise until it stops. Old gate valves can seize or break, so turn them gently.

Test it once a year

Close it, open a tap to confirm water stops, then open it again. If it won't move or drips, have a plumber replace it before you need it.
